Bourbon Apple Cobbler & Whiskey Sour Pairing

Is it a cobbler or is it cake?! I’m not really sure, it’s both and neither at the same time haha, but what I do know is that it is freaking delicious!!!

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner and rona is still a guest that has overstayed her welcome, I think more and more of us are considering a romantic night in this year so, let’s make sure your menu is RIGHT honey!

The season for apples is just about ending so before all the good ones are gone and we head into the spring fruits, let’s use them! Fruit when it is in season is literally everything your body and taste buds need. I try to eat seasonally as much as possible because not only is it cheaper and healthier, food in season also tastes wayyyyyy better!

This boozy gooey recipe is adapted from a recipe shared with me from my friend and colleague Chef Melissa Hass of thefrontporchgourmet.com. I, of course added my flair to it, aka alcohol haha and a few other tweaks and here we are. I thought in the spirit of the bourbon in the cobbler that we would do things a little different and pair the dessert with a cocktail. My take on the traditional Whiskey Sour has got a splash of Disaronno, maple syrup, the works, you name it.

Now if you’re someone that is a tad bit challenged in the kitchen, this is the perfect recipe for you! You don’t need any special equipment and honestly it’s almost impossible to mess up, unless you just straight burn it!

We simmer our apples in a nice quality bourbon with sugar and spices until your house smells like heaven and your mouth is watering, pour it over your batter, and bake. That’s it!

In a house with a child that doesn’t typically like fruit cobblers and I personally am not huge on apples, this cobbler is a hit!! I think of this more of a cobbler cake because it’s giving more cake vibes than say a peach cobbler but it’s incredible nonetheless.

You could swap out apples for your fruit of choice. I’ve done this recipe with strawberries (*note to omit the cinnamon if you do this) and with peaches and they were both a homerun, so feel free to get creative!

Could you pair this dessert with a luscious dessert wine, absolutely. However, the warming effect of the baking spice flavors in a nice aged bourbon, the nuanced flavor of maple and caramel from the barrel, combined with the freshness and acidity from the citrus was the perfect match for this dessert. Our cocktail complimented the caramelized flavors in the cobbler so well all while still being super refreshing.

The drink isn’t super sweet despite the maple, because I am not into super sugary drinks but it does add a lot more interesting flavors to our bevy than just adding regular simple syrup. I highly recommend you give this take on a Whiskey Sour a try (with or without the Cobbler if you’re a lush like me). It is a sure winner and now in my cocktail arsenal (I’m a legit mixologist in my mind lol)

A no fuss sweet treat done in less than an hour with a unique cocktail pairing is just what you need for a yummy date night, girls night, or my folks who just have a sweet tooth.
